Ствол оружия. To have someone over a barrel означает «иметь кого-либо в своей полной власти, в полном распоряжении». Раньше в британской армии или на флоте военнослужащий, осуждённый за дисциплинарные проступки, подвергался так называемому Field Punishment No 1 («полевое наказание № 1»): его привязывали к стволу орудия и били кнутами или верёвками. Если тяжесть его проступка была велика, то приказывали выстрелить из орудия, к стволу которого был привязан нарушитель, что приводило к перелому рёбер осуждённого.
